Ocean Pollution
Poster Series
The Ocean Pollution poster series raises awareness about the devastating impact of plastic pollution on marine life. The designs would be displayed in environmental education centers, aquariums, and coastal community spaces where people can learn about ocean conservation. Each poster focuses on an example of how plastic waste directly affects sea creatures; sea turtles becoming entangled in debris and starfish being smothered by floating plastics. The series features photographic imagery manipulated in Photoshop to create visual representations of these threats.
The first poster centers on a sea turtle with plastic debris wrapped around its neck, accompanied by the headline “Sea turtles do not need necklaces.” The statistic from National Geographic states “Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations”.
This provides context about the scale of the problem. The second poster shows a starfish with plastic waste positioned like a hat, with the headline “Starfish do not need hats.” This is paired with data from the Healthy Ocean Coalition stating that “plastic is killing more than 1.1 million seabirds and animals every year.”
Typography utilizes Avenir Next Condensed in demi bold and bold weights, in white text except for the emphasized “do not” phrases which are shown in yellow. This treatment creates a clear hierarchy while maintaining visual consistency across the series. Both posters include a call to action directing viewers to oceana.org. The combination of compelling imagery, stark statistics, and consistent design elements creates an impactful message about the urgent need for ocean conservation.
